Falconers began to breed birds of prey in captivity in the early to mid 70’s. Today, utilizing falconry techniques and modern science almost all species have been bred successfully. This research is now being used to breed birds for the art of falconry and replenish wild stocks affected by an unhealthy environment.

Mission Accomplished!!!

However

"A Clean Environment is the Key"

The Falconry Centre has bred 23 species. We breed approx. 70-80 raptors each year!!!
Our Eagles and Hawks are bred in an open designed aviary and partitioned from the next pair of birds. We provide each pair of birds two nesting sites which face the morning sun. All of the breeding stock are previously trained birds and range in age from 3 years to 28 years old. When the centre opens on May 15, many of the young are already hatched and can be seen looking out over the edge of their nests.

Falcons are bred in sealed chambers to minimize disturbances from humans and other birds. The falcons are viewed through a one way mirror, oblivious to your presence. In addition the chambers ensure that the young falcons are as wild as wild falcons, perfect for the art of falconry.

A separate climate controlled room in the education centre was built for the incubation and brooding of young. Most of the young are returned to their parents at 3 to 10 days old. A large picture window provides public viewing.

Eggs are allowed 1 week of natural incubation with the parents before collection and then placed in an incubator. Eggs are weighed and temperature controlled for about one month. Some can be candled to watch the embryo growing. Many times the parent birds will recycle and lay a second clutch of eggs.

Newly hatched young require the warmth of the parents so they are placed in a brooder. Temperature is reduced at about 1 degree per day until it reaches room temperature.
Young in Brooders

These falcons are being naturally raised by their parents. The breeding chambers allow visitors a rare glimpse into the natural behaviour of falcons.
