Recovery * Renewed * Released

Every year, many wild birds are brought to The Falconry Centre for treatment and care. The Centre has been appointed by the Ontario Government as a "Wildlife Custodian"; a place where sick, injured or orphaned birds may be taken. We utilize our expertise with birds to assess, treat and release back to the wild for a "second chance". It is important to know that humans only encounter a small fraction of the natural mortality which occurs in birds each year. However, since our human activities are responsible for causing injury and sickness to some birds, it is appropriate to intervene and assist where possible to undo some of this damage.

Things to Know:

Baby Birds:If you encounter a baby bird in the spring, chances are it has just fledged. The period between fledging and sustainable flight for most small birds is a day or two. Best to leave it alone as the parents will be near by. Baby birds are susceptible to predation during this period, however this is natural. If you attempt place it back in the nest, you may lead a predator such as a raccoon right to the nest by following your scent.

Adult Birds:If you can pickup an adult bird, there is definitely something wrong with it. It could be an injury, disease, old age or down on it's luck. Either way, the bird will need immediate care. Everyone has a cardboard box, and it is the best for transporting a wild bird. Do not use a cage. Put some grass, straw or carpet in the bottom and a few small air holes. For large birds, including Birds of Prey, use gloves, blanket or coat to collect the bird and then place in box. Then find out where to take the bird.

* Do not feed or water the bird. *The wrong treatment is worse than no treatment!
